Cairo, October 18, 2001

Dear comrades,

These are the last events in Egypt:

There was a gathering in the university of Cairo which included trade unionists, communists, the new trotskyists, and the revolutionary socialists. In total there were about 15,000 comrades demonstrating against the US war against Afghanistan.

When we tried to get out of the university walls the police fired tear gas and attacked many of our comrades with heavy sticks. About 12 people where arrested in that night, 8 were released after 36 hours but 4 are still 4 in prison.

yours,

H.

Attitude of Egyptian socialists on the war in Afghanistan

Bin Laden - Made in America

This is what remains in the minds of communists in Egypt. Bin Laden and the muslim fascists were responsible for the collapse of the communist strength in Egypt which was completed by 1978. President Sadat(1970-198), following the advice of the US, helped the fundamentalists using them as a defence wall against communism.

History repeats itself, Sadat created the Devil of Islamic fascism and was murdered by this devil's hands ... and now the same is happening with the united states.

Most of the Egyptian communists are confused these days. They do not know wether to stand against US imperialism or against islamic fascism. The leftist bougeois have a clear attitude, they support the US war against the Taliban.

The Marxist-Leninists are devided in two sections . The thesis of the first group of older communists is a narrow national viewpoint. They think that the main enemy for leftists in Egypt is the islamic movement supported by Bin-Laden, and that if the islamic groups were attacked and destroyed politically and economically as a result of the US military attacks this would break the alliance between the government and the moderate islamics as the latter's life depends on the balance of forces between the extremists on one side and the government on the other side.

The thesis of the second group ,who is mostly formed of young Marxist-Leninists and (a majority of them Trotskyists) is against the war. They base themselves on the principle that the main enemy is imperialism. They also explain clearly the connection between the various kinds of evil (including islamic reaction) an the capitalist system as a whole.

Another reason is that the communist movement in Egypt should maintain an internationalist perspective. While Islamic funamentalism is a real danger for communists in Egypt today, they still have to be part of the international struggle against capitalism.

If we want to break the dirty trinity of CAPITALISM-RELIGION-GOVERNMENT we should destroy the controlling head which is international imperialism.

comradely,

H.
