Will Support Fight Against Terrorism Beyond Afghanistan
Report by John Deane,

Text] The European Union will support the US in
pursuing the battle against international terrorism beyond Afghanistan,
provided there is reliable evidence to justify such action, a senior EU
figure said today.
EU special
representative on foreign and security affairs Javier Solana said the
American administration's intentions were not yet clear. But in
principle EU members were committed to backing Washington's campaign to
eradicate international terrorism.

within US President George W Bush's administration are known to be keen
to extend the campaign to deal with the likes of Iraqi leader Saddam
Hussein. Terrorist camps in Somalia associated with Usama
Bin Ladin's al-Qa'ida are also a possible target.
Interviewed on Sky
News's Sunday with Adam Boulton programme, Mr Solana was asked if the
Americans had a mandate for action against al-Qa'ida in countries other
than Afghanistan -- the so-called "phase two" of its post
September 11 battle against terrorism.
Mr Solana said: "I
don't know what is phase two. It is not known what is phase two, it is
not established, there are divisions of opinion within the American
administration.
"So nothing clear
about that has been established, no decision has been taken."
But he went on: "In
any case, I'm sure, as they did in phase one, our American friends will
... represent a case, if there is need to do it, because it is part of
the fight against terrorism. We will continue to be
supportive, no doubt about that.
"If there is
going to be a continuation of the military action to other countries,
everybody has to be conscious of the reasons, of the proofs, of the need
to do it, as it was before.
"But in any case
... the countries that belong to the European Union no doubt will
continue supporting the fight against terrorism, we are going to do it,
and we going to continue doing it."
