Tunisia issues warrants for terrorists March 15 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) – Judicial authorities were preparing to issue international arrest warrants against a number of Tunisians living abroad who are accused of belonging to terrorist organizations, a well-informed source said Friday. The source, who requested anonymity, told United Press International that the authorities already have a first list of 70 Tunisians, including many recently arrested in various European countries. Tunis has requested European countries to hand a number of its nationals accused of committing terrorist actions for trial in Tunisia. Italian, Spanish and Belgium security authorities have announced the arrest of Tunisians on charges of belonging to Osama bin Laden's al Qaida network. Last January, a Tunisian military court sentenced 34 Islamic militants to up to 20 years in prison for belonging to a group linked to the Qaida network. Thirty-one of those sentenced were members of Ahl al-Sunna wal Jamaa (Followers of the Sunna and Islamic Community), tried in absentia. Some of those sentenced were in police custody abroad.Tunisian prosecutors say the militant Islamic group organized training for its members in Afghanistan with help from al Qaida. The trial was the second of its kind in Tunisia since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks against the United States.
